In-Situ Concrete Testing

In-situ concrete testing assesses the strength and condition of concrete in place, without removing it from the structure. It’s used to verify quality on existing builds, investigate defects, and confirm that hardened concrete meets its design requirements. Our engineers carry out in-situ concrete testing on site across the UK, producing the data you need to make informed decisions about a structure.

Rebound hammer (Schmidt hammer) testing — A fast, non-destructive way to estimate the surface hardness and approximate compressive strength of hardened concrete, useful for assessing uniformity across a structure and flagging areas for further investigation.

Core sampling and testing — Cylindrical cores are cut from the structure and tested in the lab for compressive strength and density, giving a direct, accurate measure of the in-place concrete where a definitive result is needed.

Half-cell potential surveys — Measures the electrical potential of embedded reinforcement to map the likelihood of corrosion, helping identify at-risk areas before deterioration becomes visible.
Cover meter surveys — Locates reinforcement and measures the depth of concrete cover, confirming it meets specification and durability requirements and informing any further testing.

Concrete Testing

Some of the UKAS accredited tests we offer include:

Measures the maximum load a concrete specimen can bear before failure, the primary indicator of whether concrete meets its design strength. Cubes and cores are tested to BS EN 12390-3, with specimens prepared and cured to BS EN 12390-2.

Assesses the workability and consistency of fresh concrete before it’s placed, a quick on-site check that each batch matches the specified mix. Carried out to BS EN 12350-2.

Determines the volume of entrained air in fresh concrete, which governs its resistance to freeze-thaw damage and long-term durability. Measured to BS EN 12350-7.

Fresh concrete is sampled correctly at the point of placement so that all subsequent tests are representative of the concrete actually used. Sampling is carried out to BS EN 12350-1.
